Christmas Card Messages for Friends and Family

A Christmas card does not have to sum up the whole year.

A message to start with

Wishing you a Christmas with good company, warm socks and plenty of second helpings.

It can simply tell someone you are glad they are part of yours. Start with the kind of Christmas you hope they have, then add a detail that belongs to your relationship. The messages below leave room for busy houses, quiet holidays and loved ones you cannot see in person.

These examples are personal and nonreligious. If faith matters to the recipient, add a wish that genuinely reflects their beliefs.

Short Christmas card messages

A short greeting works especially well when the cover already carries the festive mood. Choose one warm thought instead of squeezing several wishes into a single sentence.

A little Christmas hello to someone who makes the whole year brighter.
Hope there is a peaceful moment in your Christmas that is just for you.

A little Christmas humor

Merry Christmas. May your cookies outlast your patience for untangling the lights.

For family

Family messages feel warmer when they mention something familiar. Think of a shared meal, a much-loved tradition or the person who always makes everyone feel welcome.

Christmas always brings me back to your kitchen and the feeling of being home.
Thank you for making room at the table and in your heart, every single year.
The wrapping changes, but getting to celebrate with you is still my favorite part.

For friends and loved ones far away

Acknowledge the distance without letting it take over the greeting. A shared memory or a small plan to catch up can make a remote celebration feel more personal.

Saving you a place in the Christmas chaos, even from this many miles away.
I miss our Christmas catch-ups. Here is a little festive hug until the next one.
Different places, same terrible Christmas jokes. Thinking of you and smiling today.

For a friend nearby

Merry Christmas, friend. I am so glad our ordinary coffee dates were part of this year.

When Christmas feels different this year

Not everyone needs a message about the happiest time of year. Keep it gentle when someone is grieving, exhausted or going through change, and leave out demands to celebrate.

Thinking of you this Christmas, with no expectation that you make it a cheerful one.
Wishing you kind company, space to rest and a little comfort wherever it finds you.
Sending love for this Christmas exactly as it is, and for you exactly as you are.

Make it sound like you

For a complete card, add the person’s name before your message, then a closing that fits your relationship: “With love,” “Best wishes,” or simply your name. Read it aloud once before sharing.

Replace one general phrase with something only you would know. Instead of wishing someone a lovely Christmas, mention their favorite holiday recipe, the walk you always take together or the film you plan to watch at the same time. Keep the detail affectionate. If the relationship is more reserved, one specific thank-you is enough.

Merry Christmas, Maya. I will miss our argument over the last dinner roll. Save me a place for next year.

Give your words a lovely home.

Choose a cover, add your own message, and share your CardBunny card with a link. A little thought can go a long way.

A few helpful answers

Can I keep a Christmas card message to one sentence?

Yes. A name, a warm wish and your sign-off can feel more personal than a long message that could go to anyone.

Should I include New Year wishes too?

You can add a brief wish for the year ahead. If New Year is the main occasion, choose a New Year card and make that the focus.
